Ghana has long been appreciated for its exotic locations and cities which include the Cape Coast. This beautiful area is famous for its richness in history and has so much to offer. However, the forts built in this area are the most prominent features. In the olden days, these used to be fully functioned lighthouses, look-out posts and trading post. Today, these forts are nothing but beautiful preserved buildings. These forts also depict a devastating history belonging to the colonial era in Ghana which included the disturbing slave trade. These well-known forts can be visited as travelers from all around the world board on cheap flights to Ghana.
Fort Victoria and Fort William:
Cape Coast in Ghana is famous for its forts. These include Fort William and Fort Victoria hidden behind the marvelous Cape Coast Castle. Located on the top of hills, these two forts have great historical touches. Walking around these forts and getting to know about the interesting environment of the Gold Coast is a fantastic thing to do. These small forts were used as look-out posts which helped in indicating any kind of approach or invasions from the sea. The views of the ocean and the Ghanaian landscape are simply amazing from the Fort William and Fort Victoria.
The Cape Coast received the Fort William in the year 1820 and it later served as its lighthouse. However, the fort did not function as a lighthouse for longer and it was probably due to the lack of light. Today, Fort William is a home for many people who are working in the Cape Coast Castle and is also regarded as a tourist attraction. Tourists get to enjoy the amazing views of the nearby town by climbing the top of the fort. The venue is perfect for a history fonder.
Fort Victoria is also considered as a place of tourists’ interest. However, according to many tourists, the fort holds a lonesome atmosphere but a rich history. There is not much special about the Fort Victoria, it is only comprised of a square turret surrounding by a big round wall. This venue is only famous for the views it provides from its top.
Cape Coast Castle:
The castle was once the very prominent trading post (slave trade) and it was comprised of both dreadful dungeons and luxurious quarters for the English governors. Although a historical building, it is still in a good condition and a famous tourists’ attraction in Cape Coast. In the year1960, the castle became a home to the area’s main post office, the port’s customs houses, the law courts and a jail. Later on, the post office of the castle (along with the law courts) was shifted to the town. In the year 1962, the port stopped serving for international shipping and the customs house in the venue was closed and deserted. The prison of the castle was closed in the year 1993 and the castle became a tourist destination having a museum with preserved dungeons.
Views of Cape Coast from forts and castle are spectacular. Historians indeed adore their Cape Coast explorations in Ghana. Staying in this part of the region is hassle-free and the atmosphere is tourist friendly as well. One can get to know about the original chronicles if Ghana flights are taken.
